Recently found my prompted blinking at a folder with a bunch of all capital letter files in it. This bash shell script made them lowercase

Two Days in Tasmania

Tasmania is a land of unique natural beauty. As a remote destination there is much to explore. My path followed the morning sun to the warm eastern coast, for some waves and rays. There I found Redbill bay, a reserve for flying penguins.

Not really all that rough with a van, rather it was nice for a couples days escape. After meeting some friendly locals I headed for lime bay national park. The route took me off down the paved roads, and onto dirt tracks until I found this cove of great camp sites just before sunset.

Sculptures By The Sea 2011

Bondi is where the world goes to the beach. And what better place to host an art installation then the cliff walk between the Bondi and Tamarama. Sculptures by the Sea is just one such installation, it features sculptures of many different types and aesthetics in a picturesque beautiful location.

On the opening weekend, I visited the exhibition under partly cloudy skies keeping the temperature for being too hot. There were people from all walks of life and regions of the work appreciating both art and nature.

And like many things Aussie, there is an exercise component of the event as well, the walk features many steps and is good way to get out and about and have some fun.

Art Imitates Life

Recently took a life drawing course with Joe Manifold of the Julian Ashton Arts School. The class was a ten week night coarse with a live model. Usually we would start each class with some gesture drawings to loosen up. Joe encouraged me to focus and consider the fluidity of the line. We used three simple circles for the head, chest and hips. Arms and legs could be depicted with lines with triangles at the ends. A center line could also be drawing to note basic the direction and angle of the form.

Next we tried to expand on this concept by using simple geometric shapes to represent these anatomical forms. Instead of using circles we drew the three main body regions as cubes. The arms and legs became cylinders. The hands polygons and the feet triangles. The approximate leg radius became a circle. Some measurements and refinements were done to try and illustrate the correct proportions relative to each part. The three dimensionality of the cubes is meant to indicate direction and angle.

From there we continued to build, by trying to understand composition. Juxtaposing curved lines and straights. Letting the mind fill in the details, rather than trying to draw it all in. We also began to use shadow shapes to describe the inner form. Still very simple squares and straight lines, and filling them in with tone. We learned about hatching to indicate the direction of the light source. Our model for the class was Abby. Over all it was good to do some longer poses with a skilled instructor.

vivid sydney is a winter festival of light, to illuminate the dark skies around circular quay. With the main focus being on the opera house, these photos were taken of the light sculpture installations around in an around the pedestrian promonade.

for these shots I was using a Nikon coolpix 12.0 megapixel digital camera. One thing that I experimented with was turning of the flash to try an capture more of the light coming from the sculptures and preserve the darks.

The analogy that "reading blogs is like god listening to all the prayers before bed," I mostly agree with except for the listening part. To be more specifically accurate, up until now god must have been using some type of agreegator to read all the blogs. And since frankly not everyone out there likes reading, why not expand the audience and invite some of the non-readers to participate. So I wrote a little python script that can be used to listen to blogs. Think of it as podcasts for those of you on skimpy data plans that don't allow for downloading of multimedia content.

espeak is an open source speach synthesizer, the script uses it to handle the text to speach stuff. SurryHills Festival 2011

The SurryHills festival is a benefit for the local community center, featuring local music, food and craft. I was lucky enough to catch this years addition one sunny afternoon not so long ago. Rocking up, after a morning of surf over at Bondi; the first sounds heared came from avante noise rock performance of Domeyko/Gonzalez , as proof of truth in advertising the setting was perfectly surreal. After a quick lap of the craft tents, electronic duo Fishing played a groovy set, even doing a cover of TLC's "No Scrubs" to much comedic effect. The definite highlight on the day was the head liner Jinja Safari a multi-piece rock ensemble that really got the crowd dancing all around. All in all this was a splendid day out, and if your in Sydney for the automn then definitely make it over to the SurryHills festival!

So this time I tried to mix some things up, and came up with a few ideas. First up, there is always a shortage of tables,and I sit at a desk all day no this time I tried drawing at a painters easel. Guess what I tablet sketching is actually putty cool, and it means that there is less glare from those reflected overhead lights. Plus it gives a chance to hold the going up through the index finger and thumb, a comfy penny style I picked up at my last drawing class from Allison the instructor. Collectively this was a big win, and a step in the right direction towards developing an individual style.

Besides some advances in the physical mechanics of the process, I had a few insights into operating the software. I am notorious for always going off the page, so why not let the computer help out by zooming in the screen so the is a margin around the edges. When drawing its a good idea to measure out the canvas so I use Photoshop guides to divide up the canvas into grids, this helps with measuring and proportion to at the image up in pieces.

The navigation window has always been my friend. From The class at college of Marin, I learned about creating a thumbnail to help see the broad gestures from a distance. Why not combine these two concepts and look @ the navigator a free thumbnail. Drawing, especially on a computer, can be difficult so definitely make to most out of the stuff that it can help you with.

Another fabulous class with the lovely French model Denise. The room has been so packed for these sessions, there is even another person who draws on computer. Instead of using a tablet like me, she has a Macintosh and a wacom. I experienced some technical difficulties: having to close down programs and recalibrate the screenduring the; unexpectedly rebooting during the second set due to some system updating, I think, and losing one of the best drawings of the night. Still I drew these two during the 15 minute long poses in the final set, and saved just before my laptop's battery died. It will be a couple of weeks before the next class, so we'll see if I can find another muse until then.

another night spent sketching@the Sando. This time Kia was the model. After an initial set of five ones and then a set of five twos; we finished things off with a ten and a twenty of. This one was the twenty. This was my third session using on HPTouchmart tablet and Photoshop rather than traditional media, using opacity controls in the absence of proper pressure sensitivity. Clear there is still room for a lot of experimentation I thus for the medium is not dissimilar from drawing with a sharpie of felt tip marker.

The story, based on the Brothers Grimm tale of the handless maden, and is result of a year-long obsession for writer and director Amy Sass. Lily Taylor - overtones

A friend recently passed me, one of the gems of 2009. Produced at Sound Arts in San Francisco, Lily Taylor's "overtones" is both soulful and melodic. The dominant instrumentation is voice and piano, with occasional interludes and conjectures by guitarist John Miller and cellist Stephan Canny. Lily Taylor, also known for her numerous performances around the city as a live looping artist, puts forth a strong show singing lead and back up vocals. The temporal quality of Lily's voice is reminiscent of 6° artist Jorane, emoting a similar contemporary classical style. One particular draw is the clean and unhurried sense of sensibility, the eight songs unfold naturally in their own space and time, a welcome relief from the all too high speed pace of modern life. The narrative of songs found is both intriguing and mysterious, leaving the listener far from jaded and definitely thirsting for more. Searching itunes I couldn't find this album, though Lily has a MySpace webpage:

The down tempo movement has been taken a step lower by inflating the air mattress and turning out the lights. In a radical paradyme shift, the deeplistening dream festival invites you to become completely relax. While so much of today's music serves as penny sweets to prop you up and keep you going, total relaxation challenges this very notion of purpose. Lust for excitement and instant gratification has left a vacum for the pendulum to swing powerfully towards investment in the revitalizing properties of sleep.

Sound walks is a moving journey through a distant landscape. Composed mainly of field recordings that have been looped and rearranged into a mosaic soundscape. Abstract musical etudes dot the landscape, augmented by multiple-tambral electronic tones and resonance. Animals and insects call and chirp through a clouded ecoscape perpetually shifting in the swaying breeze.

The musician trades focussed alert attention from the conciousmind for a chance to communicate directly with the subconcious imagination. In the sleeping state the normal cognetive defenses of built up to categorize and reference perceptive stimuli are released. Alert focused memory regions of the brain are a rest while subconcious areas of memory activiely recailibrates processing events during the sleep cycle.

The audience experience also provides interesting opportunities for personal cultural development. More than just sleeping with the television on, the dream festival relies on a cummunal trust. With legislature banning sleep in towns across the state, communal sleep challenges that notion. If the risk is to let yourself become unaware in a group situation the reward is the valuable possibility of experiencing art at a precognitive stage. At night the traffic noise subsides clearing the air for an undiluded musical experience.

After wild night of expressive artistry at the CK cafe, in Claremont, open mic hosted by VJFranzK, I found my self staring at an impressive rack of electronic gear. Located in the Pamona arts district Noise Bug is a true oasis of electronic musical instrument delights in the desert. With so many knobs to twiddle its hard to pick just one, thankfully you don't have to and the fun can last for hours. This is a great place to find that essential item to take home with you, there are plenty to choose from at this store. Whats more this weekend the festivities include Ezra demoing the new Buchla kit and the guys from Arturia raining down with their storm of beats.

Schedule of Presentations and Performances
Presentations and performances will be for scheduled for each day in the computer music zone presentation area. Targetted presentation length is 20 minutes but they can be longer or shorter if appropriate (20 - 40 minutes). Email Kristina Forester on this list about scheduling.

- The following times are tentative and may move as I sort out the scheduling with people.

Sequencing SuperCollider with Ableton Live using IAC and Sound Flower

The pictured, is of SuperCollider being sequenced with Ableton Live. I am using the IAC bus to transmit MIDI from Live to SuperCollider and Sound Flower to get the audio back into Live for mixing and recording. The midi coming from live contains note frequencies, on/off events, and pitch bend. The source code for the SC3 project comes mainly from the MIDIIn tutorial. I also read some back dated posts about using the SC several with alternative output devices. Below is the source code. It works in three stages:

Just in time for the holidays, Bandcamp come through with tracks for you! Not just is another indie music site, band camp lets artists sell their music online for free and a variety of network tracking statistics features. The layout is stylish, and unfettered by extraneous advertisements. They also have a flexible pricing structure for downloads. And to top it all off their widget has a neat-o 3D visualizer, very similar to what I used to do back in the with wings3d and pd at spin jam :

Tremolo Audio Unit

I have been working with the SuperCollider audio Units Wrapper. The plug-in is a basic tremolo unit, suitable for an effects send bus. It has a nice clean sound, and you can automate the modulation frequency. Available for download here

To install simply download and place in the /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components of the system or your home directory. Then restart your audio units compatible host. I have tried it with Ableton Live and AU Lab, and had a lot of success.

dotted fields came to life out of a series of exchanges built around one chance encounter. The two men who resided in the same region, built upon similar sounds, and moved across country at the same time, accidentally met at a small show in an art gallery on a dreary night. From that one instance a series of sonic exchange sessions began. It was those sessions that gave birth to the dotted fields.
